Choosing a Major
Choosing a Major If you haven't taken our assessment, be sure to take advantage of the Focus2 online survey. This tool can help you identify what career path you might enjoy and lets you explore
different possible occupations while showing you which academic majors here at Ouachita may
be the best fit. (Access Code: career)
Looking to compare what occupations are related to various majors? Take a look at
What Can I Do With This Major? and MyPlan.com and compare notes.
The U.S. Department of Labor is constantly updating their Occupational Outlook Handbook. This online resource gives you an idea of the nature of the work, job outlook, earnings,
and more for hundreds of different occupations.
Here are a few things to think about as you choose your major:
- Ask questions! Talk with department heads, professors, students and the Career & Calling team to get good information about majors and minors.
- Identify what you're passionate about! Think about what excites you, what makes you curious, the type of work you like to do and the people you like to work alongside.
- Take an afternoon and shadow a professional in a field you might be interested in. This will help you see first-hand if this job is what you expected and is something you will enjoy. You can use this knowledge to finalize your academic major.
- Know the details early. Be aware of course requirements, prerequisites and degree plan information. Talk with your academic adviser early and often to make sure you're on the right track.
The Career & Calling team is here to help you choose a major that's a great fit for
you. Schedule an appointment with us by emailing us at careerandcalling@obu.edu.
